Tribute: Michael Jackson

This man was weird, weird, WEIRD! But the musical genius that was Michael Jackson is astounding.

I recently went to see ‘Thriller Live: a Tribute to Michael Jackson’ in London’s West End (this is the town equivalent of name dropping *ahem*). Anyway, there were 4 singers including a “young MJ” who performed his most popular songs with dancers. I thoroughly enjoyed the show but more than that, just hearing all his hit songs, reminded me how much I love his music and how influential he really was.

There were a few songs I felt were missing and needed to be performed because of how much I love them but I think that might be selfish.

The missing songs:

‘Stranger in Moscow’

‘Liberian Girl’

‘Remember the Time’

‘You are not alone’

‘You rock my world’

It started with his Motown hits with the Jackson 5 (The Jacksons)… My favourites are ‘I Want You Back’ and ‘Enjoy Yourself’. I can’t help but be in a great mood when those songs play.

And then the MJ songs from ‘Off the Wall’ like ‘Don’t stop till you get enough and ‘Rock with you’ and then the biggest selling album of all time, ‘Thriller’ which had amazing hits like ‘Beat It’, ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Human Nature’. His other albums: ‘Bad’, ‘Dangerous’, ‘History’ and ‘Invincible’ were also just phenomenal wonders of the world… His movies, not so much -_-

Then his music videos were a cultural powerhouse all on their own. He started the ‘mini movie’ craze which saw story lines and scripts being added to music videos with the biggest being ‘Thriller’ and then added another video staple when he had his celebrity friends guest star in his music videos ‘Liberian Girl’, ‘In the Closet’ and ‘Black and White’. He was also the first artist to truly use dance and choreography to tell part of the story, and to have signature pieces of clothing.

He was a big philanthropist and loved highlighting the plight of children, especially those in 3rd world countries.

Even though there was tons of controversy surrounding Michael (the plastic surgery and child abuse allegations), I always believed that even though he was a complete weird freak man, he was innocent and taken advantage of, right till the end of his life… Especially by that evil dictator man he called his father.

So many artists have tried to emulate MJ, from his choreography and dance style, to his mannerisms, to the way he uses his voice: From Usher and Ne-Yo, to Destiny’s Child, Lady Gaga and beyond.

RIP MJ…

Obsessed with Michael Jackson

xx
